Everyone thinks Android is founded by Google but actually Android was founded by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears and Chris White. Nick Sears was the vice president of that company, T-Mobile. So the first Android prototype was actually made by T-mobile Company, not Google. Later on, in year 2005, Google acquired Android and ever since then, they work together.
The first android’s prototype was known as “Sooner”, which looked like a Blackberry model with no touch screen. Yes, first android phone had no touch screen, like all other versions! After that, Apple launched their first iPhone that had no physical keyboard or full touch screen. Therefore, next model of Android, which is actually known as the first model, was T-mobile G1 which had a touch screen interface. So, the first prototype which looked like a blackberry phone was never launched in the market but that was the first android prototype.
Initially, Android Operating System was only for Digital camera Operating System, but later they decided to launch it for Smart Phones.
Android 3.0 was the first Android version which was made for tablets. At that time, Apple announced their first iPad and the crowd started shifting from phone to tablet. Thus, to compete with others, Android launched their first tablet with Motorola, as Motorola XOOM.
In the starting days of Android, many people thought that Android was not that good and eventually it would fail, as at that time iPhone was just launched and other mobile companies had taken the market. So, a new operating System could not come and take over the market that easily, as per critics. However, now you can see the growth of Android as it has become one of the most widely used Smartphone Operating Systems.
WebOS was another Operating System at the time of Android launch, which was praised and used by many when it was announced, but after a month their sales dropped and WebOS ruled out. Google made use of the opportunity and hired the designer of WebOS, Matias Duarte, to improve Android’s interface and design.
One of the coolest features about Android is that it is an open source Operating System which has many benefits like: you can change the source code of OS, add additional features on OS as per your needs, can create your own application and test it on your phone, can customize your phone the way you want to, in which you can change the display of anything like icons, menu, etc. Since Google is the member of Open Handset Alliance (OHA), that’s why Android is an open Source Software.
All of us know about the Android wear and other Android Smart watches but do you know when was the first Smart watch actually launched? It was in 2010, when Sony launched a watch with a liveView that could get connected to your android devices and display various feeds and control the media player of the phone. Later in 2013, Sony launched second version of that watch, SmartWatch 2, which had some additional features.
Do you know the real name of the logo character of Android? Many think that its name is Android, but actually its real name is Bugdroid. It is not official, but the Google employees call it by that name.
All Android versions are named after Deserts like:-
- Froyo/Frozen Yogurt
- Ice Cream Sandwich
But the starting version was named normally like the first version (Android Alpha), as Android Beta. All the versions of android are in alphabetical order, from A to M and the next versions will also follow this trend.
